Welcome to the Greater Indianapolis Metropolitan Area!
Besides the city of Indianapolis itself, the greater metropolitan area includes 11 counties and some well-known communities such as Carmel, Fishers, Noblesville, Greenwood, Anderson, Lawrence, Westfield, Plainfield, Zionsville, Avon, and many others too numerous to mention. We’ve already mentioned a few things that make Indianapolis special, but here are some other things you might not know about Indy:
- Veterans: Indianapolis is patriotic, and especially in terms of honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Indy is home to the nation’s largest collection of monuments dedicated to veterans and the casualties of war outside of Washington DC.
- Infrastructure: Indy is constantly improving and upgrading the city’s infrastructure. Two of the biggest construction projects in the city’s 200-year history have happened since the turn of the millennium: The $1.1 billion Col. Harvey Weir Cook Terminal at the Indianapolis International Airport, and the $720 million Lucas Oil Stadium, a multipurpose arena that serves as home field for the NFL Indianapolis Colts football team. Both projects were completed in 2008. In 2011, the Indiana Convention Center got a $275 million makeover and expansion. Next on the docket is a $1.9 billion overhaul of city’s combined sewer overflows called DigIndy, expected to be completed by 2025.
- Business: There are three Fortune 500 companies headquartered in Indianapolis, including health insurance giant Anthem Inc., pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly, and the Simon Property Group, which is the largest real estate investment trust in the country. Because of its central location and robust highway and railroad infrastructure, Indianapolis is home more than 1,500 logistics/warehousing/distribution companies that collectively employ more than 100,000 workers. It is also home to the world’s second-largest FedEx hub.
- Indianapolis Cultural Trail: This $62.5 million public-private partnership project took 12 years of planning and six years of construction, completed in 2013. The result is a network of 8 miles of urban bike and pedestrian paths connecting the city’s cultural districts with neighborhoods and access to all significant cultural, heritage, arts, sports, and entertainment venues throughout downtown.
The above only hints at a few things that make Indy an awesome place to live. You’ll be so glad you moved here – and your move can be stress-free if you let Busy Buy Movers get busy helping you move to your new home!
