What You Need to Do After Moving In

You prepared for your moving day like a professional mover. You labeled your boxes, stowed away your important documents and valuables, and it showed. Moving in was a breeze thanks to your careful preparation. But are you ready for what happens directly after your moving dates?

While most people keep and maintain a moving day checklist and inventory sheet, few people keep a checklist for what needs to happen post-move to truly make your new place a home. Here’s a rundown of some things you should do directly after your big day.

Double Check Your Boxes

If you’re like many smart movers, you hired a moving company to assist you in moving your largest pieces of furniture down to the smallest box. Most movers using a reliable moving company will keep an inventory sheet that lists the items that were in each box.

Upon the professional movers leaving your new home or apartment, you’ll first want to double check the items in the boxes against your inventory sheet. If a box or a household item happens to be missing, notify the moving crew right away. It may have been left in the moving truck by mistake. If you find broken or damaged goods, note the specific damage in your inventory list and contact the moving company in an attempt to resolve the issue.

Unpack Essentials First

While it may be tempting to begin unloading toys or decorations right off the moving truck, you’re likely better off waiting on those types of items. Unpacking essentials like dishes, bed sheets, etc. first will allow you to have everything you need to sleep and eat before you get to the extra things that make a house a home.

Yes, not having WiFi right off the bat may be painful, but it will be worth it to have a place to take a well-deserved nap in the middle of unpacking.

Stay Organized

The hard work isn’t over just yet. Don’t forget to stay organized after moving into your new place. Write down a list of everything that still needs to be accomplished over the coming days or weeks.

This may feel like just another thing that takes time out of your day, but staying organized is the key to having a successful move. Your list may include tasks like planting flowers, calling the cable/internet company, unpacking non-essentials, or even simple things like getting groceries. Keeping this list will allow you to make sure your move goes as smoothly as possible.

Clean Your House

It might have been clean when you walked in on move-in day, but chances are that post-move, you have some cleaning to do. Setting aside time to clean your house after the movers leave gives you the best opportunity to make new space exactly what you want it to be.

Many movers, especially first-time movers, may give up and live in clutter for a few days or weeks. Doing this can make moving feel like it takes forever and can leave a dark cloud over the whole process. Cleaning your new space right after moving in, even if you still have boxes to unpack, makes your space feel like it’s yours from day one.

Change Your Address

Naturally, your new home comes with a new address. One thing many movers fail to change until several weeks after a move is their address on legal, work, or personal documents. You should also set aside time to contact banks, credit card companies, insurance companies and other important institutions and inform them of your recent change of address. Your real estate agent will likely encourage and/or help with this process as well.

Assess Your Current Financial Situation

Moving comes with moving expenses. Once the relocation is over, it’s important that you sit down and assess your current financial situation. Did the move go over your allocated moving budget or did you manage to fit it in? If the relocation cost you much more than you expected, how are you planning on addressing that deficit?

No two moves are the same, and fully understanding your financial situation pre and post-move gives you a chance to either celebrate coming in under budget or figure out how to address going over.
